Calvatia rubroflava
Calvatia rubroflava is not an uncommon mushroom
in Kansas, but I had not seen it before 1998. That year I found it
on several occasions. This specimen was growing in my neighbor's
yard where he had discarded his grass clippings.
As the mushroom matures it changes color from
white to an orange brown, and will stain bright yellow when injured.
As the exterior decomposes to release spores, it is a very sticky orange
mass which seems to stain everything it touches.
