Amanita thiersii

This mushroom is generally considered a southern mushroom. It was first identified at this somewhat northern location in Lawrence in 1988, although it had been found several years before. Now it has become a common summer urban mushroom during rainy spells. It frequently fruits at the same time as Chlorophyllum molybdites.

It is a rather large Amanita, and is especially notable for the sticky, cottony, lace-like mass that is the remains of the universal veil. It is named in honor of Dr. Harry Thiers, well known for his participation in many NAMA forays.
