Urnula craterium

Urnula craterium

Many hunters have never seen the Devil's Urn. It probably has not been reported from the west coast at all, and although it is common in Kansas, it fruits so early most mushroomers have not yet ventured into the woods. It is among the first fungi to appear in the spring, and may be gone before the first morels are found.

Fruiting bodies are leathery and often filled with rainwater. While the inside of the cup may appear black, it is actually a very dark brown. Although it appears to grow on the ground, it fruits on tree limbs buried under leaf litter.
