Amanita populiphila

In January 1995 the Kaw Valley Mycological Society was thrilled by the announcement of a new species of Kansas mushroom, described by Rodham E. Tulloss. But it was largely due to the efforts of our club member Elizabeth Moses that this mushroom was studied and named. The complete name is Amanita populiphila Tulloss et Moses. Elizabeth first collected the mushroom in 1990, and she and her husband cooked and ate a batch with no ill effects whatever.

The mushroom is found under cottonwood trees, sometimes in great quantities. It is pallid or white in summer, but in late fall it darkens to a golden tan color. It has no annulus, and requires careful digging to preserve the very fragile volva.
